A woman taking CBD oil. Text reads "How to use CBD oil tinctures"

Adding a CBD oil tincture to your daily self-care routine is a great way to enhance your life. There’s a lot of information about CBD out there— some of it good, some of it not so good—and it can be hard to get a straight answer to some of your CBD questions.

In this post, we’re going to answer the following three questions:

  • What is a CBD oil tincture?
  • What will it make me feel like?
  • How do I use a CBD oil tincture?

What Are CBD Oil Tinctures?

A tincture is a mix of one or more herbs in concentrated liquid form. You can make your own tinctures out of virtually any plant you want and either water or alcohol.

A CBD oil tincture differs from a traditional tincture in a few ways.

  1. A CBD oil tincture has an oil base, not a water or alcohol base.
  2. CBD oil tinctures are generally more refined than at-home tinctures for a number of reasons like, marketability and dosing consistency.

Sunset Lake CBD’s Tinctures

At Sunset Lake CBD, we use ethanol to extract cannabidiol (CBD) from hemp flowers that we cultivate. We then evaporate off the alcohol and infuse the remaining hemp extract into MCT oil. Because we test and know the potency of our hemp extracts, we can make standardized CBD oil tinctures that we then sell online.

We make our tinctures with full-spectrum CBD. As opposed to broad-spectrum, full-spectrum CBD contains all of the cannabinoids present in hemp plants at the time of harvest, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

What Will It Make Me Feel Like?

Taking a CBD oil tincture can make you feel different depending on how you use it. Not only that, but CBD can affect people differently based on a few things like:

  • Weight
  • Body size
  • Previous cannabis/CBD use
  • Type of CBD (full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, isolate)

For the sake of this post, let’s explore the most commonly reported effects.

  1. Relaxation – Many users report feeling much more relaxed after taking their dose of CBD oil. So much so that some people are changing their entire daily routines because of CBD. Whereas a drink after work is common in many places, some professionals are switching to CBD because of health concerns and preferred effects.
  2. Sleepiness – Many people use CBD (and CBN) to sleep. As a natural extension of relaxation, you can use CBD at night to get ready for bed and improve the quality of your sleep.
  3. Focused – Some users who take their CBD in the morning report being more able to focus on tasks at work. Some user reviews on Sunset Lake full-spectrum oil tinctures mention “not being pulled in many directions” after taking CBD.

What CBD Won’t Do:

As a natural remedy, everyone will respond a little differently to CBD. However, CBD oil tinctures won’t make you feel stoned. While they aren’t THC-free, they don’t contain enough THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid, to make you “high.”

How Do I Use My CBD Oil Tincture?

You can use your CBD Oil tincture in several different ways. We’ll walk you through each step-by-step.

  1. Sublingual – Also known as under the tongue, sublingual application is the fastest-acting ingestion method. The CBD in your tincture can cross over into your bloodstream via the thin membrane under your tongue. To take your CBD sublingually, put your dose under your tongue, press your tongue down into the oil, and count to 20. Once you’re finished counting, swallow the rest of the oil.
  2. Ingestion – You can also also add your CBD oil tincture to food or beverages. We would suggest adding it to smoothies, dips, or salad dressings. That way, you won’t notice any odd hemp flavor in your food. Consuming your CBD can delay the onset of effects as you’ll need to digest the dose before you feel it.
  3. Topically – Using your CBD oil tincture topically isn’t as common as the first two methods, but is still a great option for folks with localized pain. Just dispense a little on your skin and rub in the oil. You should feel the effects immediately.

Which Dose Is Right For Me?

For most folks, we recommend starting with a 25mg dose of CBD, especially if you’re ingesting your CBD oil.

If you’re new to CBD, you’ll want to acclimate to this dose and let yourself feel the dose. If you experience any odd side effects, lower the dose and try again. If you don’t feel anything, consider upping the dose.

Because CBD oil tinctures are a natural remedy, there is no one-size-fits-all dose. You’ll need to experiment to find what works best for you.
