Two dog paws outstretched with the text "Can CBD Help With Your Dog's Paws?"

While it’s not uncommon for your dog’s paw pads to become rough and cracked, that doesn’t mean that it is healthy for your pup to walk around on rough paws. That’s akin to us walking around with plantar fasciitis— not uncommon, but definitely not comfortable.

Rough pads can lead to other issues like compulsive licking, joint problems because of uneven gait, and pain. If you notice that your dog has some rough paw pads, it’s time to consider moisturizing.

In this post, we’ll be talking about,

  • What CBD Is
  • How CBD can help with paw pads
  • And, how to find a product right for your pup

Why Use CBD?

If you’re a dog owner, you know that your furry companion’s paws are as important as any other part of their body. After all, those paws carry your pup through daily adventures, from walks in the park to playful romps in the backyard.

Dogs can experience discomfort and issues with their paws, and that’s where CBD (cannabidiol) comes into play. CBD is one of the many cannabinoids produced by the hemp plant and is thought to have many benefits including,

How CBD Can Help Your Dog’s Paw Pads

Anti-inflammatory:

A lot of research has observed CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties. While inflammation can be helpful when fighting infection, too much can be uncomfortable for your pup. CBD may be able to help reduce redness and irritation in your dog’s paw pads.

Pain Relief:

If your dog experiences pain or discomfort because of rough, cracked paw pads, CBD’s potential pain-relieving effects may be able to help them before and after activity.

General Health:

Like our skin, dog paw pads benefit from moisturizing and soothing balms. Too much friction, heat, and irritants can make your dog’s paw pads rough and cracked. CBD-infused paw balms should both soothe any irritation and help moisturize their paw pads to increase the area’s resilience.

Picking The Right Product For Your Dog’s Paws

There are already a ton of CBD-infused topicals on the market, mostly designed for our skin. What will work for you and me, may not work for your dog’s paws. Below are a few helpful tips on how to find the best CBD moisturizer for your dog’s rough paw pads.

Edible & Organic Products

Let’s be honest, even though we’re talking about topicals, chances are your dog is likely going to lick or eat some of the CBD meant for their paws. Because that’s the case, you’ll want to look for topicals with simple formulas made with edible grade or organic ingredients.

The rule of thumb should be if you wouldn’t want your dog to eat it, don’t rub it on their paws (unless you’re prepared to break out the cone of shame.)

Topical Product

While you could use a low-potency CBD oil on your dog’s paw pads, chances are that it won’t have the same moisturizing benefit that a topical product would. Also, be sure to follow the dosage and application instructions. There are always products out there with quirks.

Look For Test Results

If you’re buying a paw pad product infused with CBD, it should come with a third-party certificate of analysis. This certificate will tell you about the levels of CBD and other cannabinoids in the product. If the retailer can’t provide you with one, that may be a red flag.

You can see all of Sunset Lake’s certificates of analysis here.

Talk To Your Vet

As always, when it comes to your precious fur baby, you can always consult your veterinarian. They should be able to offer you guidance about which products, dosage for your dog, and potential interactions a CBD topical might have.

CBD: A Paw-pular Choice

Rough paw pads are a common part of every dog’s life. Whether they’re romping through the woods or walking on hot asphalt, there’s a good chance that your pup’s paws will wear down, dry, and crack.

But, just because it’s not uncommon, doesn’t mean that it’s healthy for your dog to walk around on them. A balm or moisturizer infused with  CBD may be able to help heal your dog’s paw pads and bring them the relief they deserve for being a good boy. That said, every dog is unique, so be aware of your dog’s needs and consult your vet for any further advice.
