The dosage guidelines for cats and dogs are a little different.

Dosing Guidelines for Your Dogs

We recommend giving your dog 1-2mg of CBD for every 10 pounds of their body weight.

If your dog is:

  • 1 – 10 pounds, give them 0.1 – 0.2mL of oil
  • 11 – 20 pounds, give them 0.2 – 0.4mL of oil
  • 21 – 30 pounds, give them 0.3 – 0.6mL of oil
  • 31 – 40 pounds, give them 0.4 – 0.8mL of oil
  • Etc.

Dosing Guidelines for Your Cats

We recommend giving your cat 2-3mg of CBD for every 10 pounds of their body weight.

If your cat is:

  • 1 – 10 pounds, give them 0.2 – 0.3mL of oil
  • 11 – 20 pounds, give them 0.4 – 0.6mL of oil
  • 21 – 30 pounds, give them 0.6 – 0.9mL of oil

How to Give Your Pet CBD

For the first two weeks, we recommend you stick to our dosing guidelines above. Give your pet this amount of oil once (or twice) per day according to your pet’s needs, and stick with this dose for at least two weeks before adjusting the dose.

Use the helpful markings on the dropper to assist with precise dosing. If you have questions about dosing for your animal, please consult your veterinarian.

Fast-Acting: Est. time to effect: 20-30 minutes

Fill the dropper to the desired dosage and dispense the oil directly into your pet’s mouth. Be sure that they swallow. They may not like the taste at first. If that’s the case, we recommend using the more gradual method.

The Paw Method

If your pet is a picky eater and refuses to eat its dose, you can try the paw method. Just apply the oil to the tops of your pet’s two front paws. Your pet will instinctively clean its paws and, in the process, consume its dose. This is especially effective if you are a cat owner.

Gradual: Est. time to effect: 45-75 minutes

Fill the dropper to the desired dosage and add it to your pet’s water dish or food. If your animal is picky, you can even drizzle this oil over their favorite treats or into a slice of cheese.

When your pet consumes this oil with food, the onset of effects will take longer.

Large Dog Breeds

If you own a large dog (100+ lbs), please check out our 750mg Full Spectrum CBD Oil Tincture. We make the 750mg and 600mg Full Spectrum Pet CBD Oil with the same ingredients.

The stronger 750mg CBD Oil is more potent and will be a more cost-effective product for your pet.

Our Recommendations

We recommend letting your pet acclimate to CBD before you dose them for specific reasons. The reason is that many pets respond differently to CBD. Once you know how your pet handles CBD, feel free to administer CBD as needed.

Limited mobility & pain: Give your pet their dose of CBD throughout the day as needed. If you and your pet are about to be active, give them a dose 30 minutes before physical activity.

Separation anxiety: Give your pet their dose of CBD oil 30 minutes before you leave the house. They should begin to acclimate to the effects while you’re still home.

Stress: If you know that your pet will be stressed out by an upcoming event (thunderstorm, fireworks, vet appointment), try administering a dose 30 minutes beforehand. If your dog is picky about CBD Oil, please check out our peanut butter CBD Dog Snacks!

FAQ

General Questions:

Is CBD Oil the same as Hemp Oil?

CBD oil and hemp oil are not the same thing. If you are comparing this item to hemp oil listed on Amazon, please know that those products contain no CBD at all.

Hemp oil, sometimes called hempseed oil, is cold-pressed cooking oil that does not contain any substantial amount of CBD.

CBD oil is made with at least two ingredients: CBD-rich hemp extract (think of it as the essential oils pressed from the hemp flower) and a carrier oil like olive oil or MCT oil.

What is CBD for pets?

CBD (cannabidiol) for pets is a natural compound, called a cannabinoid, that can help support your pet’s overall well-being, manage stress levels, and improve mobility.

What’s the difference between pet CBD and human CBD?

While both CBD products for pets and products for humans contain the same form of CBD, it’s possible that they can be formulated differently.

Often, CBD designed for pet use will be flavored like peanut butter, bacon, or blended with salmon oil. Human CBD products made with added ingredients or sweeteners should not be given to your pets.

Here at Sunset Lake, we make our Pet CBD Oil with the same ingredients we make our unflavored CBD oils with.

Can humans take pet CBD?

While we won’t speak to all brands, if you wanted to use Sunset Lake’s 600mg Full Spectrum Pet CBD Oil, you could. We use the same high-quality ingredients to make both our human and pet tinctures.

Alternatively, if you have an extra large or giant dog breed, you can also give them Sunset Lake’s 750mg Full Spectrum CBD Oil Tincture. It would be a more cost-effective option for treating your pet.

How should I store this product to maintain freshness?

Please store this CBD oil tincture in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Keep the bottle closed when you’re not using it.

Oxygen and UV light can both spoil the MCT carrier oil and degrade the CBD within.

Do veterinarians recommend CBD for pets?

Some vets do recommend CBD to their clients. However, because CBD laws regarding veterinarian prescriptions vary from state to state, not all vets are allowed to discuss or suggest CBD.

With that said, we recommend always consulting your vet before starting your pet on a new supplement.

Effects Questions:

What does CBD do for dogs?

CBD can do a lot to benefit your dog’s overall wellness. Consistent dosing can support your dog’s stress level, anxious behaviors, immune function, sleep quality, and mobility.

What does CBD do for cats?

CBD can also do a lot to benefit your cat’s well-being. Consistent dosing can help support your cat’s nervousness, stress level, sleep, and mobility.

Will CBD make my pet get high?

CBD will not make your pet high. CBD is a nonintoxicating cannabinoid. That being said, this 600mg Full Spectrum Pet CBD Oil is a full-spectrum product and does contain trace amounts of THC— a cannabinoid that, when taken in significant amounts, can make your pet high.

As long as you follow the suggested use directions, your pet will not get high taking this product.

How long until CBD starts to work for my pet?

After administering CBD, your pet should start to feel the effects within 30-60 minutes.

For some benefits, like managing joint pain or improved mobility, it may take a few days of consistent dosing for you to notice any change in your pet.

Health Questions:

How many milligrams (mgs) of CBD should I give my pet?

Dosing depends on your pet’s situation, weight, and species.

We recommend starting your dogs on 1-2mg of CBD per 10 lbs of body weight.

We recommend starting your cats on 2-3mg of CBD per 10 lbs of body weight.

For other house pets, we recommend consulting your veterinarian for dosing guidelines.

Will CBD interact with my pet’s medications?

CBD can interact with medications and interfere with how your pet metabolizes them. Before you give your pet any CBD, please consult with your veterinarian to talk about potential interactions.

Legal Questions:

Is this product legal in my state?

Please check your local and state laws for any specific restrictions.

It is legal for us to sell, process, and ship our hemp products from Vermont because they comply with the federal 0.3% delta-9 THC and Vermont’s total THC limits, respectively.

Can I travel with my pet’s CBD?

Depending on the product, you can travel domestically with your pet’s CBD. If you’re flying, make sure that your liquid CBD products are under the 3.7 fluid oz limit.

If you plan on flying with your pet and want to take their CBD along, know that the 2oz bottle should be fine to fly.

Frequently asked CBD Questions

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring chemical compound produced by mature hemp and cannabis plants. It is one of the 100+ cannabinoids that have, as of now, been identified in Cannabis Sativa plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana, CBD is non-intoxicating. This means that consuming CBD does not result in the “high” typically associated with cannabis use.

CBD interacts with our body’s endocannabinoid system— a biological network composed of cannabinoid receptors and signalers— to help the body maintain overall health and homeostasis.

The endocannabinoid system plays a role in many bodily functions including,

  • Sleep
  • Mood
  • Stress
  • Metabolism and appetite
  • Memory and our ability to retain new information

CBD is known as a phytocannabinoid, phyto- meaning ‘of the plant’ and mimics our body’s endocannabinoids, endo- meaning internal, that our bodies naturally produce. Some believe that consuming phytocannabinoids like CBD can help a user’s endocannabinoid system run more efficiently.

CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol (Canna-Bi-Diol.) Emphasis ours.

CBD by itself does not show up on a standard workplace drug test. That’s not to say that CBD products won’t show up on a drug test. For more on this subject, check out our blog post on the subject.

CBD is well tolerated by most, but using CBD can cause some unwanted side effects. Some of the most common include:

  • Change in appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Upset Stomach

CBD isn’t shown to have any dependence issues, meaning that you will not get addicted to CBD if you begin to use it. The World Health Organization has stated that “…in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential
”

CBD is non-psychoactive and will not make users feel intoxicated. In other words, CBD will not get you “high.”
