A dab tool with concentrate on the end. Text reads "What Is Live Rosin?"

Live rosin is one of the more recent products to take the cannabis concentrate market by storm. Loose live rosin dabs and vape cartridges tend to be some of the most expensive products at your local dispensaries. Are they worth the hype? In this post, we’ll explore live rosin and,

  • The extraction process
  • The different types of concentrates
  • And some of the reported benefits of live rosin

What Is Live Rosin?

Live rosin is a type of solventless cannabis concentrate used with raw cannabis plants. When we say raw, we mean cannabis or hemp flowers that we haven’t cured and still contain a significant amount of water weight.

Rosin is a concentrate we make with heat and pressure by squeezing the essential oils out of our flowers. While still a fine product, many concentrate connoisseurs note that using heat damages cannabinoids and terpenes and ultimately affects the flavor.

Live Rosin is the answer to the connoisseur’s concerns. To protect the final product’s taste, we must first wash our raw flowers in ice water. The cold water freezes the trichomes and breaks them off from the flower.

We’re left with a wet, waxy product that needs to be dried and cured. The resulting product is called “live rosin” and contains all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids that make for one extremely tasty experience.

Live Rosin Vs. Other Cannabis Concentrates

Let’s examine the other types of concentrates on the market to better appreciate live rosin, its price, and why it’s so sought after.

Butane Honey Oil (BHO)

BHO is made by using butane as a solvent to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis flower. BHO is a somewhat crude concentrate. Liquid butane first strips the plant material of all trichomes. We then need to boil off the remaining butane to leave us with BHO.

Even though BHO is not the most coveted, it’s a cheap solvent-based extraction, can be done at scale, and can turn even the most mediocre flower into a potent concentrate. BHO is typically consumed with dab rigs.

Rosin

Rosin is a solventless concentrate made by applying heat and pressure to cannabis flowers or hash. The result is a sticky, resinous substance that retains much of the plant’s original flavor and potency. People usually smoke and dab rosin the same way that they do BHO.

Distillate

Distillate is a highly refined cannabis concentrate and is usually used to manufacture other cannabis products. We make it by taking an ethanol or carbon dioxide crude extraction and further distilling the impurities from it. The result is a golden, honey-like substance.

Sunset Lake uses CBD distillate to manufacture some of our topicals and CBD oils.

Hash

Hash, also known as hashish, is the original cannabis concentrate, dating back thousands of years. We make it by pressing Kief together with heat until it forms a light brown to black block of material. Consumers usually smoke hash right alongside cannabis flower.

How Does Live Rosin Stack Up?

You’ll notice that all of the other concentrates listed above require either a solvent or heat to make. Both solvents and heat can affect the final product by altering the terpene profile of the final product. Live rosin stands out from the rest by,

  1. Being a solventless extraction that uses no heat
  2. Matching its parent cultivar’s effect profile
  3. Containing a more complete terpene profile

As we learn more about how important terpenes are to the cannabis and hemp experience, it’s no surprise that live rosin has become a wildly popular product at your local dispensary.

What Is CBD Rosin?

CBD Live Rosin is made the same way that its counterpart is but with hemp flower rather than THC cannabis. Because CBD products command a lower price than THC products, it’s difficult to find. Many producers feel that they won’t make the money back on time and labor with CBD rosin. Expect to see some products in the coming years, though, as customers ask for more 1:1 products.

FAQs

How Do You Smoke Live Rosin?

You can smoke rosin in one of two ways. You’ll either need to buy it packaged in a vape cartridge or use a vaporizer, or you can consume it with a dab rig. If you’re new to cannabis concentrates, you’ll want to opt for a vape pen. It’s the more affordable and accessible option.

Is It Worth It?

If you’re in need of powerful cannabis concentrates, live resin is a great option. If money is a concern, though, you should be able to find the same relief using more affordable concentrates like BHO.

What Are Live Rosin Gummies?

Live Rosin Gummies are edible gummies infused with live rosin concentrate. They offer a more complete cannabinoid and terpene profile than other edible products.

They usually have a stronger hemp flavor than gummies made with distillate or isolate.

What Is Live Hash Rosin?

Live Hash Rosin is an incorrect term. There is no such thing. You can either have Live Rosin or Hash Rosin. The latter is made by applying heat and pressure to ice water hash.

What’s The Difference Between Rosin & Resin?

What a difference one letter makes. While we know how the former is made, the latter resin is made using solvents like butane. Unlike BHO, resin is made with raw flower inputs rather than any on-hand cannabis flower.
